Toshiba doubles HDD capacity amid shortages
When the demand for massive data storage explodes, the infrastructure that holds it all must keep pace. That is the high-stakes game Toshiba is playing right now: investing billions to future-proof its position in the rapidly evolving world of hard disk drives (HDDs).
Toshiba has launched an ambitious expansion, pouring approximately ¥60 billion ($380 million) into doubling its hard drive assembly capacity in the Philippines. This isn’t just an infrastructure project; it’s a strategic bet aimed at meeting the insatiable appetite of the AI sector for high-capacity storage.
The goal is clear: to dramatically increase production for nearline HDDs by fiscal year 2027. This expansion sets the stage for a revolution in drive technology, pushing the company toward next-generation drives that redefine storage density.
Underpinning this expansion is a technological leap. The new manufacturing lines are designed to produce drives that increase storage capacity per disk by up to 40%. This breakthrough relies on cutting-edge microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) technology, allowing drives to utilize up to 11 platters and deliver capacities exceeding 30 terabytes.
This technology is crucial for Toshiba’s roadmap. While the company is already working on next-generation 30TB-class drives, the expansion ensures a smooth ramp-up toward even more ambitious goals: 65TB-class drives by 2030, and eventually, 100TB-class drives.
The production ramp is already underway. The installation of new lines has begun, and initial shipments from these advanced models have already started rolling out, meaning the pathway to delivering these high-capacity drives is wide open.
Beyond simply increasing output, Toshiba is also streamlining its operations. The company plans to integrate advanced automation into its cleanroom operations and drive inspection. These measures are designed to boost manufacturing yields while simultaneously reducing the need for additional staff by 40%, ensuring efficiency scales with ambition.
The storage market is fiercely competitive, especially in the AI-driven space. While rivals like Seagate and Western Digital have capitalized on the demand for 30TB and 40TB drives, Toshiba is catching up. Despite facing challenges in specific market segments, the company has successfully sold out all existing units produced in recent quarters, demonstrating that the market is ready for Toshiba’s future offerings.
This expansion is more than just a manufacturing upgrade; it’s a declaration of intent. By committing to these next-generation technologies and expanding its capacity, Toshiba is positioning itself to significantly grow its market share from its current level to 30% in the medium term, solidifying its role as a key player in the future of data storage.
