Valve promises to clear the Steam reservation backlog by 2026
The wait is officially nearing its end for many, thanks to a rather elaborate system of digital lottery and patience orchestrated by Valve for their highly anticipated Steam Machine releases.
Valve recently provided an update on their sales and reservation process, assuring fans that they are “fulfilling orders on a daily basis.” But the real story lies not just in the fulfillment rate, but in the intricate dance of reservations and waitlists that precede ownership.
When initial reservations were first announced in June, the system operated like a sophisticated lottery. Signups were gathered until June 25th, after which entries were randomized to determine an initial reservation order. Those near the top secured priority, while everyone else entered a waiting line for more stock to arrive.
To manage this demand across different markets, Valve implemented a flexible system, allowing the reservation queues and waitlists to move at varying speeds depending on specific products and geographic regions. This dynamic approach meant that some items were moving quickly while others required longer anticipation.
Crucially, the process is designed to ensure fairness. Simply being on a waitlist does not grant any advantage over those who already have a reservation. A spot on the list is purely a chance for future availability, rather than a guaranteed leapfrog of existing reservations.
The transition from anticipation to actual purchase involves several distinct steps. Receiving an initial reservation email is just the beginning. To actually secure the machine, users must wait until they reach the end of the initial reservation queue for their specific product and region before being invited from the waitlist.
This sequence is designed to keep the momentum steady: a reservation status signals that there is a three-day window to purchase. It is this final step—receiving the official notification and seizing the opportunity—that determines ownership.
Valve expects that these purchasing emails should be distributed by the end of the year, 2026. While this is certainly good news for those eager buyers, it also means that many will still be in for a considerable wait ahead before they can finally claim their warm new rig.
