WoW gear cheating in raids and dungeons

The design politics of video game studios in the early 2000s offer a fascinating, if slightly mischievous, look at the creative process. Far more interesting than the official mandates are the subtle elbows and feet designers put on one another in environments lacking a crystal-clear pipeline.

This internal wrestling match was particularly evident at Blizzard, where the dynamic surrounding the power of crafted gear provides a perfect example. As Principal Game Designer Kris Zierhut reflected in a recent interview, there was a quiet, cheeky in-fighting over item design. Zierhut, who joined the company in 2005, looked back on the constraints of the “no changes” era of Classic, reflecting on the decisions made by the team under those strict guidelines.

“The only design direction that really existed was: Don’t change anything,” he noted. He admitted that he was part of the discussions with colleagues like Tom, Jeff, and Scott, and he recognized where mistakes had been made during that time.

One of the subtle areas of contention involved the status and power of crafted items within World of Warcraft. While crafted gear was certainly recognized as valuable, the systems were designed to provide clear outlines on how powerful gear could be, allowing professions to deliver quality equipment. However, some designers made the choice to subtly inflate their gear’s power, often moving up stats behind the scenes.

This behavior strikes us as amusing with the benefit of hindsight. It felt a bit like a team of developers quietly bumping up their stats, much like a clandestine meeting in a gear equivalent of The Big Short—just adding a few extra points of stamina to those boots. The point is, the mechanics of item power were secondary to the true focus of gameplay.

While those subtle adjustments might have been overlooked by the individuals involved, the real trajectory of the game was already shifting. With over two decades of hindsight, the true future of WoW was clearly heading toward dungeons, dungeons, and more dungeons.

Fortunately, the community was not left waiting for a correction. The subsequent updates addressed these concerns, allowing players to craft powerful, soulbound blue items for themselves if they were blacksmiths or leatherworkers. These new crafting options now compete directly with items obtained through questing and dungeon achievements, proving that the act of crafting is absolutely worth the effort for every leveling journey.
