Xbox expands into films TV theme parks and merch

Microsoft is taking its sprawling empire beyond the console controllers, launching a fresh initiative designed to harness the immense power of its intellectual properties and connect them with a wider global audience. Under the Xbox banner, a new division called XP is being established, signaling a major pivot toward integrating gaming fandom with the world of entertainment, merchandise, and immersive experiences.

This strategic move aims to reinvigorate the Xbox brand by focusing on what fans love, moving the focus from purely gaming hardware to a holistic universe of content and community engagement. The goal is to unlock new opportunities for these franchises to grow worldwide by creating deeper connections with players and new fans.

The XP division is structured to manage these diverse interests, operating across four distinct sub-divisions:

  • XBOX PICTURES: Focused on bringing Xbox worlds and characters to new audiences through film, television, and other forms of linear storytelling.
  • XBOX PRODUCTS: Dedicated to creating merchandise and physical products that are authentic to the fandom, allowing fans to celebrate and express their favorite franchises.
  • XBOX PLACES: Aimed at bringing communities together through live events, immersive attractions, broadcasts, and destinations.
  • XBOX PARTNERSHIPS: Concentrating on working with creators, brands, and communities to develop new experiences, sponsorships, and brand collaborations.

At the core of this strategy is a unified mission: expanding the reach of Xbox franchises and building richer ecosystems around them. This initiative brings together capabilities that have existed across various Xbox teams for years, aligning them behind the shared goal of creating a more unified and collaborative effort across the entertainment landscape.

This move is not unprecedented for a company that already boasts a rich portfolio extending far beyond gaming. Microsoft has already made significant inroads into areas like film and television adaptations, countless branded merchandise lines, and even ventures into the theme park business, such as the upcoming Minecraft theme park. The XP division simply formalizes this expansive vision, ensuring that every facet of the Xbox universe can connect with fans in meaningful new ways.

Led by Kayleen Walters, who steps into the role of head of the division, XP is poised to redefine how Xbox interacts with its vibrant community, promising a future where gaming fandom fuels an exciting and diverse world of media and experiences.
