Xbox is embarking on an ambitious new chapter, carving out a distinct identity beyond gaming itself with the launch of a new division named Xbox XP. This initiative signals a strategic pivot, focusing on how fans experience Xbox franchises through film, television, live events, and consumer products.

The vision behind Xbox XP is to capture the full breadth of franchise engagement, moving the focus from gameplay to the holistic experience. This new structure is built around four core investment areas designed to leverage the immense power of Xbox’s intellectual property:

  • Xbox Pictures: Bringing worlds and characters to new audiences through film and television adaptations.
  • Xbox Products: Creating merchandise and licensed items that allow fans to celebrate and express their love for the franchises.
  • Xbox Places: Developing community-building experiences through live events, immersive attractions, broadcasts, and destinations.
  • Xbox Partnerships: Collaborating with creators, brands, and communities to develop new sponsorships and brand alliances.

Guiding this evolution is Kayleen Walters, who brings a rich history of franchise development, having spent time at Microsoft, Lucasfilm, and even the Mojang studio. Her expertise positions her perfectly to translate beloved game worlds into compelling media experiences.

As Xbox CEO Asha Sharma explained, the concept is rooted in the idea of experience points. “XP is a play on ‘experience points’,” Sharma clarified, noting that this formalizes the four investment areas designed to enhance the franchise’s reach. The goal, she noted, is to ensure that the franchises mean more to people than the time they spend playing them.

This organizational shift comes at an interesting time for the company. While Xbox is simultaneously streamlining operations through significant layoffs, the establishment of Xbox XP creates a new focus that raises questions about priorities. It contrasts with the ongoing efforts to streamline the gaming division, prompting a look at how the company is balancing cost-cutting with ambitious creative expansion.

The emphasis on media—film and television—is a major component of this new strategy. It seeks to expand the reach of iconic intellectual property into new mediums, moving beyond the confines of interactive entertainment. This approach connects directly to the broader trend in gaming where movies and TV are becoming powerful engines for franchise growth.

The ambition extends to revitalizing community interaction, highlighted by the focus on Xbox Places, which aims to create live, immersive experiences. The move also sparks a discussion about the relationship between the gaming world and the entertainment industry, particularly concerning franchise adaptations and the culture surrounding events like BlizzCon.

Whether this restructuring translates into tangible results for the games themselves remains to be seen. It is a massive undertaking, and the industry is watching to see how this new direction impacts the foundational gaming experience while expanding the franchise’s cultural footprint.
