Alts in WoW Forever: The Progression Roadmap
The future of massive multiplayer online games isn’t just about epic battles and sprawling worlds; it’s about flexibility, community, and giving players the freedom to craft their own journey. And for the developers of World of Warcraft: Forever, that philosophy is baked into the very foundation of the game design, especially concerning character creation.
The vision behind allowing players to create multiple characters, or “alts,” stems from a desire to build a more welcoming and accessible experience. By offering lower-level starting points, the developers are creating significant incentives for players to expand their gaming horizons and connect with new friends.
As vice president and senior game director Ion Hazzikostas explains, these extra characters unlock “new journeys” and provide reasons to pursue the game further. It’s about building in incentives that encourage players to engage with the game in diverse ways, rather than locking them into a single progression path.
A core mechanic supporting this philosophy is the Legacy System, which rewards players with achievement-style points for major in-game accomplishments. These points can be channeled into talent trees, providing players with crucial quality-of-life improvements. Having multiple characters makes accumulating these Legacy points much easier and more enjoyable.
Principal designer Kris Zierhut revealed that when designing the system, he considered how players would actually spend their time. Instead of focusing solely on the most challenging progression paths, he recognized the value in creating options that reduce time investment.
“There’s less time investment,” Zierhut notes. “One of the things I love about that is, now let’s say my brother wants to start playing the game. Normally I go, ‘I got my level 60 character. Sorry—I can try to boost you.’ Now I can say, ‘You know what? I’ve got this level 20 guy I’ve been leveling. You can get there pretty quick. Let’s group up and play together.'”
This approach not only boosts social interaction but also allows players to manage their time effectively. Lead game designer Tim Jones emphasizes that the developers are releasing content across all different level bands, ensuring that players can spend as much or as little time in Azeroth as they desire. This variety opens up many different lines of progression, allowing players to rationalize sessioning their time in different increments.
For many players, this flexibility translates into meaningful progression outside of the main storyline. As lead software engineer Nora Mills stated, “Your journey is never identical to what it was.” The goal is to entice players to roll an alt, recognizing that their experience is evolving, and they deserve diverse ways to experience the world.
The development team is committed to continuously expanding the world, promising new items for professions, new leveling dungeons, and new areas in future patches. This ongoing content ensures that whether a player is focusing on rapid leveling or deep specialization, there is always a new path waiting.
To streamline the experience even further, the team is exploring solutions that reduce friction for players. Ion Hazzikostas mentioned considering account-wide banking, aiming to remove the hassle of manually transferring items between main and alternate characters. The overarching aim is simple: to ensure that every player, regardless of their preferred pace, can fully immerse themselves in the world of Forever.
