Cerny and Keighley announce Nova Games Foundation

For many aspiring developers, navigating the path from concept to commercial success has become increasingly challenging, marked by financial uncertainties and tough industry headwinds. In response to these growing concerns, two titans of the gaming world are stepping up to offer a meaningful solution.
Mark Cerny, the visionary lead architect for PlayStation, and Geoff Keighley, the celebrated creator of Summer Game Fest, have jointly launched the Nova Games Foundation. This new philanthropic initiative is designed not just as a donation, but as a dedicated pipeline aimed at nurturing the next generation of game designers.
The foundation is structured as a university-affiliated fellowship program, offering significant support to emerging talent. It is set to provide grants of at least $100,000 annually to 20 young game designers, coupled with mentorship from established leaders in the industry. Crucially, the funding is provided on a no-strings-attached basis, ensuring that the focus remains squarely on creative development rather than financial obligation.
The foundation is already making an impact by partnering with 13 universities across eight countries, including Scotland, France, Germany, and Australia, demonstrating a truly global commitment to fostering new voices in game development.
The motivation behind this initiative stems from a desire to ‘pay it forward.’ Geoff Keighley emphasized that his involvement is driven by a desire to support the creative process itself. “Nova is philanthropy,” he stated, explaining that they are not seeking equity or trying to recoup the grants. “The return we’re hoping for is creative—helping new voices make games and find their footing.”
Mark Cerny echoed this sentiment, noting that his own career is winding down, but his commitment to the community remains strong. “I’m nearing the end of my career,” he commented, “but paying it forward—in the best way possible—is very much on my mind these days.”
