We live in a world increasingly populated by artificial intelligence, and soon, video games will move beyond static environments into truly dynamic, conversational worlds. The theoretical appeal of an NPC powered by AI is immense: imagine characters who don’t just follow rigid scripts but can engage in endless, meaningful dialogue. This idea promises a level of immersion previously confined to science fiction.

However, the reality of current AI implementations often falls short of this promise. While AI certainly excels at generating speech and simple responses, integrating it into complex game environments requires far more than just talking—it demands genuine personality and coherence. Early experiments with AI companions in gaming have revealed a significant gap between potential and execution.

When testing advanced AI models, the results were often underwhelming. For instance, attempts to use large language models to solve complex game puzzles or act as believable conversational partners proved challenging. One approach involving an AI companion in a sprawling RPG failed to deliver convincing interaction; the character was more of a talking box than a genuine companion.

More recently, I explored this concept in a colony simulation MMO called Seed, where player avatars interact with each other and their persistent seedlings using the game’s built-in AI. The experience here offered fascinating, if flawed, glimpses into what AI can manage.

Initial interactions proved surprisingly entertaining. When engaging with a character seedling, simple, strange observations led to amusingly elaborate responses—a testament to the model’s ability to generate text. For example, asking about the physical proportions of a character resulted in unexpected commentary on current fashion trends, demonstrating an almost surreal grasp of conversational fluff.

Yet, as conversations progressed, the novelty quickly faded into something unconvincing. The AI began relying heavily on meaningless descriptors and filler words to fill space, using terms like “heavy,” “beautiful,” and “iconic” in ways that felt entirely disconnected from the context of the game world or the character’s actual existence. These responses, while grammatically correct, lacked substance and often seemed designed solely to generate extra text rather than advance a relationship.

This experience highlights the challenge of capturing genuine emotional depth through AI. Although the system managed to detect rudimentary personality types based on player choices during character creation—some seedlings were enthusiastic, others curt—the actual dialogue felt shallow. The insistence on adding nonsensical attributes only served to weaken immersion, reminding the user that this was merely generated text, not lived experience.

The moment-to-moment reality of AI in gaming is a tricky balance. It can be useful for simple tasks, such as fielding basic tutorial questions and providing factual information faster than consulting a wiki. But when it comes to deep character interaction, the line between engaging dialogue and pure linguistic filler becomes stark. Ultimately, while the potential for infinitely talkative characters exists, the quality of that conversation must prioritize meaning over mere volume if we are to truly build worlds where our companions feel alive.
