Compulsion Games goes independent

The gaming industry is currently undergoing some major structural shifts, and the console maker, Microsoft, has been navigating some significant organizational changes, including mass lay-offs across its development teams. Amidst this corporate realignment, one studio emerged as a clear winner: Compulsion Games.

The team, best known for the acclaimed title South of Midnight, has officially pulled off a management buyout and separated from the Xbox ecosystem, solidifying its status as an independent entity. This move represents a major turning point for the creative team, moving them from a large corporate structure into full, self-directed control over their creative output.

Guillaume Provost, the CEO of Compulsion Games, confirmed the successful completion of this transition. Crucially, in the separation agreement, the studio managed to retain all publishing rights to their past releases. This means that all future proceeds from new purchases of their existing work will now flow directly back to Compulsion Games itself, granting them complete autonomy over their intellectual property.

While there was some prior speculation regarding the studio’s independence, this confirmation provides definitive clarity. The deal ensures that the team retains ownership and control, which is a powerful foundation for future creative endeavors.

Although the corporate separation presents a period of re-centering for the team, the focus now shifts entirely to the future. With the weight of corporate structure lifted, the question remains: what groundbreaking projects will Compulsion Games tackle next? The independence grants them the freedom to pursue entirely new visions, promising exciting developments for the independent gaming landscape.
