Dune Awakening cross-play coming after console launch

The desert sands of Arrakis are about to spill into the living rooms of console gamers. The highly successful survival-crafter MMO, Dune: Awakening, is preparing for a massive expansion, bringing its epic scope to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox. After proving its popularity on PC, the game is set to launch on the 22nd of September, promising players a chance to experience the Fremen’s world in breathtaking new ways.

The transition to console requires careful planning, especially when dealing with the demanding Unreal Engine 5 framework. The development team, Funcom, has unveiled specific visual modes for the PlayStation family. Players on the PS5 will be offered a choice between two modes: the Performance mode, which runs at a dynamic 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, and the Quality mode, which maintains 4K resolution but limits the frame rate to 30fps. For those with the top-tier hardware, the PS5 Pro will deliver even enhanced visuals in both modes, featuring higher native resolutions and significantly improved graphical fidelity in Quality Mode.

While the specifics for the Xbox release are still emerging, the focus remains firmly on optimizing the experience for each platform. The ambition is clear: to deliver a visually stunning and immersive experience that respects the scale of Frank Herbert’s universe.

Perhaps the most anticipated development, however, is the promise of connectivity. Although cross-play support is not available at launch, the team has confirmed that this feature is planned to arrive sometime after the console release. This future integration aims to ensure that players can share their stories, alliances, rivalries, and battles across different platforms, regardless of which console they are using to explore Arrakis.

This commitment to future connectivity signals an exciting vision for the community, suggesting that the scope of Dune: Awakening extends far beyond a single console—it’s about building a shared universe where every player’s journey matters. Get ready for the sands, because the epic saga is about to take center stage on the next generation of gaming systems.
