Halo Campaign Evolved gets decent reviews but low fan interest
For years, fans waited with bated breath and enormous hope for a return to the beloved world of Halo. That anticipation eventually led to Halo Infinite>, but as many celebrated sequels do, the experience left some feeling incomplete.
This sense of unfinished business spurred change within the development landscape. The team behind Halo decided to pivot their focus, transforming into Halo Studios, with an ambitious goal: to revisit and remake one of the franchise’s most iconic chapters—Halo: Combat Evolved.
The campaign remake was officially launched recently, immediately inviting a critical eye. While the game managed to secure a Metacritic score of 80, it didn’t quite match the highs set by Halo Infinite, which achieved an 87. This placement suggests that while the project offered a nostalgic experience, it faced some scrutiny.
Player sentiment, however, proved even more divided. While critics were mixed, the community reaction leaned toward critical feedback. User reviews paint a slightly bleaker picture, with a Metacritic user score of 5.7 and a ‘Mixed’ reception on Steam. Across the major platforms, the performance varied: 3.9 out of 5 on PlayStation and 3 out of 5 stars on Xbox.
The critical focus during this review period centered on how faithfully the remake captured the original essence. Some players noted changes to the core gameplay experience, pointing to alterations like the removal of health kits and modifications to enemy AI. Furthermore, the newly recorded dialogue was sometimes cited as inferior to the classic material, leading some to feel it wasn’t a true 1:1 recreation.
Despite the critical debate, the launch numbers offer another perspective. Sales data for Halo: Campaign Evolved remains less publicized, but initial uptake across platforms was modest. Industry analysts noted that at launch, only a small fraction of active players engaged with the title—around 8% of active Xbox players, 2% of Steam users, and just 1% of PS5 players.
Whether this reception will ultimately sway decisions regarding Microsoft’s broader plan to remake the entire Halo trilogy remains to be seen. The success or failure of this campaign remake could offer important lessons as the studio looks toward future development in the franchise.
