Heroes of the Storm gets new hero after 6 year wait
It is a rare treat when a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) manages to stay relevant, let alone surge back to life after years of dormancy. While Heroes of the Storm has never truly left the public eye, the constant stream of new content that live service games typically offer has slowed down considerably. Until now.
At the recent Blizzcon opening ceremony, the long-dormant game was given a significant jolt. Blizzard announced the arrival of a brand-new hero, Xal’atath, the Harbinger of the Void, marking the first substantial update to the game since 2022. This update finally signals a major shift, as the game has only received light-touch balance passes and bug fixes following the announcement of maintenance mode.
Xal’atath brings a fascinating backstory. She is a character steeped in the lore of World of Warcraft’s Legion expansion, having begun as a subtle, gnawing voice hidden within the weapon slots of Shadow Priest players. More recently, she has evolved into the villainous face of the current Midnight expansion, weaving a compelling narrative into the game’s world.
This introduction of a major new character is a powerful sign that the game is actively regaining momentum. Following this substantial update, the community can expect continued evolution, as Blizzard also hinted that another new hero will be revealed down the line.
