I built a router that defeats hotel Wi-Fi logins

Navigating the chaotic world of hotel Wi-Fi often turns a simple travel experience into an exercise in digital frustration. When travelers crave seamless connectivity, they are immediately confronted by the frustrating reality of captive portals and complex network restrictions.

One traveler decided to take matters into their own hands. Instead of simply battling the hotel’s restrictive setup, they chose to build a solution. They harnessed the power of a Raspberry Pi 4 and RaspAP to transform it into a fully functional travel router.

The goal was simple: achieve reliable internet access wherever they went. The initial setup proved successful for basic connectivity, providing a much-needed bridge across physical locations.

However, the journey quickly turned from a triumph of engineering into a battle against digital bureaucracy. The homemade router immediately lost its fight with the hotel’s specific captive portals.

The frustration mounted as the user repeatedly attempted to connect, getting stuck in endless loops on those restrictive pages. Eventually, the experience devolved into a comical cycle: connecting, failing, reconnecting, and ultimately resorting to tethering to a mobile phone just to get through the door.

This experience perfectly illustrates that while DIY hardware projects offer incredible potential for innovation, they don’t always provide an immediate, flawless fix for complex institutional network policies. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the simplest solution—or the simplest tether—is the most reliable route when dealing with highly secured digital gates.
