Pi-hole exposed how much my TV phones tracked

Tired of scrolling through endless promotional content just to find what you actually want to watch? For many of us, the experience of modern smart television interfaces is less about entertainment and more about relentless advertising. That frustration led one tech enthusiast down a path not just for curiosity, but for genuine digital liberation.

The root of the problem lay in the tracking ecosystem. Advertisers and data brokers thrive by feeding sophisticated profiles on every digital interaction, allowing them to precisely target the promotional content plastered across our screens. To fight back against this pervasive surveillance, a robust defense was required—one that targeted the source of the tracking.

The solution started with a classic piece of hardware: a Raspberry Pi 4. This small, powerful device became the brain of the operation, hosting a crucial piece of software known as Pi-hole. Pi-hole’s mission is simple yet revolutionary: to act as a network-wide ad and tracker blocker by filtering DNS requests.

By setting up Pi-hole on the Raspberry Pi, the user effectively created an independent filter for their entire home network. This step was crucial because blocking tracking identifiers at the DNS level prevents numerous tracking scripts from ever reaching the devices, neutralizing the data collection process before it even begins.

To ensure maximum security and privacy for the connected devices, the setup incorporated further layers of protection, including the use of Tailscale for secure network connectivity. This combination transformed a simple home network into a private, controlled environment where personal data remained firmly in the user’s hands.

The final piece of the puzzle was integrating this filtering system directly with the viewing experience. With the Pi-hole successfully managing ad-laden traffic, connecting the smart TV—in this case, an LG C2—to the network and pointing it toward the Pi-hole for its DNS resolved traffic felt like the logical next step.

The result was a powerful shift in control. By intercepting and blocking intrusive advertisements at the core of the network, the user moved from being a passive recipient of targeted content to an active curator of their digital experience. It turned a frustrating digital nuisance into a sophisticated, satisfying setup that brings true privacy back to the living room.
