Despite the life-changing sum, Ida Huddleston asserted a powerful truth: “We know whenever our food is disappearing, our lands are disappearing, and we don’t have any water—and that poison. Well, we know we’ve had it.” Her daughter, Delsia Bare, reflected on her family’s history, describing how their ancestors persevered through difficult times, raising wheat during the Great Depression and ensuring food supplies for struggling communities.

“Stay and hold and feed a nation,” Bare stated. “$26 million doesn’t mean anything.”

The tension between this deeply held value and the financial lure is mirrored by the larger environmental demands of the booming AI industry. As data centers proliferate across the United States—which leads the world in the number of facilities—they place immense strain on local resources. These massive facilities require staggering amounts of electricity and water to operate, pushing electrical grids to their limits and depleting regional water supplies.
