Lexar achieves the world’s thinnest portable SSD 0.15-inch design

Enter the Lexar Muse, an external Solid State Drive (SSD) designed to eliminate that frustration. This new portable storage device promises to make on-the-go data management seamless, all while pushing the boundaries of physical design.
The Muse doesn’t just offer improved performance; it offers a radical redesign. Measuring just 80x48x3.8 mm, the company proudly calls it the world’s thinnest portable SSD. This slim profile makes it stand out dramatically when compared to traditional external drives, offering a sleek solution for users who value minimalist design.
Achieving this remarkable thinness required some serious functional design sacrifices. To enable the drive to magnetically attach to compatible devices, Lexar utilizes a proprietary SnapLink cable that connects magnetically via pogo pins. While the drive itself is exceptionally slim, the connecting side requires a slightly bulkier mechanism, meaning users typically need to slide the drive into a protective sleeve for magnetic attachment.
Despite these design choices, the resulting footprint is undeniably superior. It manages to occupy significantly less space on the back of your phone than many competing external SSDs on the market, challenging established external drive options.
Under the hood, the Muse delivers high-speed performance. It operates as a 10 Gbps storage device, boasting read speeds up to 1,050 MB/s and write speeds up to 1,000 MB/s. This ensures that even in its minimalist shell, the drive maintains serious throughput for backing up large video files and massive datasets.
As a versatile USB-C storage solution, the Muse offers broad compatibility, working seamlessly with Macs, Android devices, and PCs. Furthermore, Lexar has integrated application support designed to simplify the process of automatically backing up footage directly from iPhones.
Lexar plans to make the Muse available in both 512 GB and 1 TB capacities, with the rollout scheduled for the final quarter of 2026. While official pricing is pending, industry representatives suggested an estimated retail price around $230 for the 512GB model and $380 for the 1TB version. As expected with devices claiming the title of “thinnest,” the Muse carries a premium price tag for its innovative engineering.
