LOTR Action RPG makes surprise return to Steam
Some games are destined for the digital graveyard, forgotten quickly after a brief flash. But sometimes, even the most ambitious titles find their way back to the spotlight. Take Lord of the Rings: War in the North, a title that began its journey 16 years ago with an action RPG trailer that promised epic fantasy combat.
Launched in 2011, the game met with middling reviews and underwhelming sales. It eventually faced the inevitable reality of the market, leading to its delisting from Steam in late 2018. For a time, it simply sat on the shelf, a forgotten piece of gaming history.
However, this dormant title has made a dramatic return, not as a simple re-release, but as the much-anticipated Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition. This modern iteration doesn’t just bring back old pixels; it provides significant enhancements, offering players features like hot-swappable characters, refined enemy-target locking, an improved interface, a new autosave feature, and countless bug fixes.
The game invites players to delve into the untold story of Agandaûr, a servant of Sauron who has amassed a powerful army in the ruins of Fornost. Players are tasked with forging their own Fellowship of three heroes to confront growing threats in the North, engaging in visceral and satisfying combat as they mark their place in Middle-earth.
While the specific reason for the original delisting remains unclear, license expiration is a likely candidate. This corporate complexity adds another layer to this gaming saga: the development studio, Aspyr, is owned by Embracer Group, which also controls other beloved franchise properties under the Middle-earth umbrella.
Embracer is currently undertaking a significant restructuring, planning to spin off Middle-earth Enterprises and related assets into a standalone company called Fellowship Entertainment. This move sees key executives maintaining their roles across the newly formed entities, signaling a shift in how the massive portfolio is managed.
Despite the corporate reshuffling, Aspyr remains committed to its creative output, promising fans more classic releases from the beloved franchise in the future. For now, the focus is squarely on the gameplay experience, delivering a polished and engaging adventure.
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition is available now on Steam, offering access to this updated world at a reduced price, making this revival an accessible opportunity for gamers everywhere.
