Lucasfilm explores all kinds of Star Wars games
The Star Wars universe, a titan of science fiction and adventure, has proven itself far more malleable than the rigid exclusivity deals once dictated. In the years since Disney officially acquired Lucasfilm, the approach to bringing the sprawling galaxy to the gaming world has transformed, moving away from narrow constraints toward expansive creative exploration.
The shift is evident in the diverse landscape of Star Wars games released since the 10-year exclusivity deal between Disney and EA expired in 2023. Instead of sticking to a single format, the intellectual property has embraced a variety of forms—from deep turn-based strategy games to high-speed racing titles—proving that the galaxy is capable of inspiring endless gameplay possibilities.
This evolution is rooted in a commitment to quality and flexibility. Speaking about the current direction of Lucasfilm Games, VP Douglas Reilley articulated a vision that prioritizes creative freedom over publisher exclusivity. He stressed that the focus is on finding great ideas, regardless of the origin of the development team.
“We’ve tried to be more flexible about who we’re willing to take pitches from, and good ideas can come from a lot of different places,” Reilley explained. He further emphasized that while embracing new partnerships, the standard for execution remains exceptionally high.
“We have a high quality bar and we want to make sure they’re excellent experiences, which typically means working with more experienced teams than, you know, new teams who have no track record of making great things.”
This philosophy has fueled a surge in diverse releases, allowing different facets of the Star Wars saga to be explored through varied gameplay. We have seen successful titles emerge, such as the turn-based strategy game Zero Company and the recently arrived racing title Galactic Racer, demonstrating the potential of the IP to transcend traditional gaming boundaries.
Given the sheer breadth of the Star Wars universe, it is entirely logical that creators are finding ways to translate the rich narrative and lore into countless game genres. This willingness to explore “all kinds of things with partners that I think are going to continue to surprise folks” positions Lucasfilm as a dynamic force, constantly finding fresh and engaging ways to bring the Force into the digital realm.
