New Arc Raiders matchmaking calms self-defense fears
The way you queue up for a fight should feel like a decision, not a forced binary choice. For months, players of Arc Raiders have been grappling with how the game structures its lobbies, and developers Embark has finally pulled back the curtain on some meaningful adjustments to improve the competitive experience.
The issue wasn’t that matchmaking was strictly “binary”—there was no friendly lobby or aggressive lobby—but the perception created by the environment. Players noticed a stark difference: solo matches often felt like peaceful walks in the park, while group matches, particularly trios, felt considerably more violent and aggressive.
To address this discrepancy, Embark listened to the community and implemented changes that redefine what constitutes aggression in the game. In their recent update, version 1.39.0, they made a critical adjustment: defending yourself is now treated differently than initiating hostilities.
Previously, defending an opponent would contribute equally to your playstyle profile as starting a fight. This new system ensures that only the fights you actively choose to start influence your perception, allowing players to focus purely on their desired gameplay style.
So, what does this actually mean for the battlefield? The game now accounts for the duration and intensity of engagements. A sustained shootout involving high damage and knockouts carries significantly more weight than a brief exchange where one side simply retreats. Furthermore, entering an engagement between rival squads—known as third-partying—is now recognized as starting a fight.
These adjustments build a much more nuanced system. They ensure that player experience is weighted by action and commitment rather than static lobby labels, fostering a space where players can genuinely choose how they engage.
Beyond the refined PvP mechanics, Embark continues to refine the overall experience. Players benefit from ongoing optimizations in matchmaking made in version 1.38.0, alongside the long-requested ability for players to select separate squad sizes within lobbies, a feature that has been available since version 1.36.0.
These changes have been enthusiastically received by the player base, signaling a positive shift in how Arc Raiders is tuned. As the team moves forward, the focus remains on delivering quality and experience, with major updates scheduled every six months, including the upcoming Frozen Trail update in October.
