The world of tabletop role-playing games is currently navigating a fascinating transition. While massive hits like Baldur’s Gate 3 set an incredibly high bar, the landscape for future Dungeons & Dragons adventures is evolving. Larian Studios recently stepped away from the D&D license to explore its own narrative world in Divinity, leaving the community to wonder what kind of follow-up Wizards of the Coast can deliver next.

In the meantime, the next major D&D entry, Invoke, is aiming for a different aesthetic entirely. Instead of mirroring the sprawling complexity of BG3, the focus here is channeling the immersive action and atmosphere of 2000s classics like The Darkness, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and Infamous.

A look at the gameplay, seen during the recent Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, suggests a polished, satisfying experience. The Warlock class, at the heart of Invoke, proves to be engaging. The mechanics feel fluid, with the hero consistently deploying the right amount of Warlock power at the precise moment needed, creating a smooth and effective flow.

Yet, as with many adventure games, there remains a tantalizing question about the freedom of exploration. While Invoke describes its Warlock setting as an open world, players will be keen to discover the depth of freeform exploration available. While some elements offer a familiar, cozy feel—like strolling into a town and hearing local reactions reminiscent of Skyrim—the narrative progression currently feels carefully orchestrated, moving smoothly from one beat to the next.

Ultimately, the success of Invoke will likely hinge on the strength of its narrative and its world-building. Having seen countless adventures where players master the art of using the right power to traverse difficult gaps, the true measure of this title will be how deeply invested the player becomes in its unique world and its characters.

The Warlock archetype itself offers rich dramatic potential. In the context of D&D, Warlocks derive their abilities from a supernatural benefactor. Invoke introduces a protagonist named Kaatri, who has made a pact with an enigmatic and powerful witch named Tasha, immediately hinting at conflicts and agendas that promise compelling storytelling.

Invoke is set to arrive next year, and the game is already generating buzz, with a Steam page live and more information forthcoming.
