OLEDs match burn-in resistance at higher brightness


The fear of burn-in has long haunted OLED enthusiasts. The worry that prolonged screen use might permanently damage the pixels—leading to ghosting or image retention—has often been a major factor when considering these stunning, self-lit displays. But what happens when the science meets the reality of modern panel technology?

A recent, rigorous longevity test by Rtings peered into the lifespan of OLED technology, comparing displays from 2020 through 2023 against an older standard, specifically the 2017 LG C7 model. The experiment involved subjecting these screens to 10,000 hours of simulated use, running them at maximum SDR brightness to mimic the daily wear and tear users experience over a decade.

The initial finding, perhaps slightly disappointing for some, was that while burn-in resistance was generally similar across the tested generations, all units eventually suffered from image retention. The bottom line is that the fear of permanent damage isn’t entirely unfounded when pushing OLED technology to its limits.

However, the data paints a much more nuanced picture. While the resistance to burn-in was comparable, the newer models offered significant upgrades in performance and efficiency. The 2023 panels demonstrated substantial improvements in brightness, handling much wider visual ranges. For instance, they were on average 28% brighter at 10% window sizes and over twice as bright at 100% window sizes compared to the older generation.

Beyond visual performance, the newer technology delivered a major punch in efficiency. The 2023 displays proved to be significantly more power-efficient, consuming 27% less energy on average during the testing period. This efficiency gain extended to power consumption at high brightness levels, where the difference is stark: the older OLED required 130W to hit 100 nits, whereas the modern displays managed that feat using only 95W.

This shift in efficiency leads to a compelling conclusion for consumers. The test suggests that users do not need to push their screens to their absolute brightest settings just to get the best experience. By running modern panels at more moderate luminance levels, users can effectively reduce pixel wear while simultaneously lowering power consumption.

While traditional LCDs still hold an edge in achieving peak luminance, the advancements in OLED efficiency provide owners with better tools to delay the development of permanent image retention. The takeaway is clear: future OLED longevity might depend less on the fear of burn-in and more on smart usage habits, leveraging the incredible power of modern efficiency.
