Overwatch devs get scared by Jetpack Cat and Bastion combo
When Team 4 launched a new era for Overwatch, they didn’t just introduce new maps; they introduced a seismic shift in gameplay. Almost a year ago, the live service FPS debuted a fresh cadence, embracing yearly themes and introducing a lineup of five brand-new heroes, including the wildly popular Jetpack Cat.
The arrival of the roster was met with immediate excitement. Among the newcomers were Mizuki, Emre, Anran, and Domina, but it was the little ginger feline in a flying mech who quickly became the unexpected, chaotic centerpiece of the community. Initially, the excitement focused on the adorable design, but soon, Jetpack Cat traded cuddles for carnage on the battlefield.
The shift in dynamic was immediate and dramatic. Jetpack Cat quickly dominated the competitive scene, particularly with her signature Apache helicopter meta. This strategy allowed her to haul teammates like Bastion high into the air, positioning them perfectly to unleash devastating turret fire onto the enemy. The resulting hideously effective combos stunned the community.
It was clear that this feline powerhouse was a game-changer. While the community often joked about the chaos, the impact was undeniable. The sheer effectiveness of the Jetpack Cat and Bastion pairing became the defining trend in competitive play, cementing a meta that was both wildly effective and utterly hilarious.
Even the developers recognized the explosive potential of this new dynamic. Associate Game Director Alec Dawson admitted that during the testing phase, seeing the potential for these extreme moments was genuinely startling. He recalled playing with Jetpack Cat and Bastion, and even Mercy, noting that the trio formed an “even scarier helicopter.”
This incredible moment of chaos led to a fascinating decision regarding the game’s development. While the meta was dominating the world cup, the team chose to allow the players to experience those extreme, unforgettable moments before implementing changes. Dawson explained that they wanted players to feel those exhilarating extremes before fine-tuning the experience.
“We want to make sure we put some of those moments in front of players. Allow them to experience a little bit of that crazy stuff before we come in and try to make sure it’s in line,” he noted. This deliberate approach aimed to preserve the sense of excitement and the memorable gameplay experiences that players associate with the game.
Eventually, adjustments were made, such as nerfs to her movement speed while carrying other heroes, helping to balance the power. However, the legacy of Jetpack Cat remains tied to that initial, unforgettable period where an adorable cat took flight and delivered some truly spectacular havoc.
