Thirty years after its initial release, the legendary franchise Quake has received a major update that dives deep into its storied history. MachineGames has unveiled Dawn of the Machine, adding 19 new levels that plunge the protagonist into a dimension of endless illusion.

Beyond the fresh gameplay, the update offers fans a fascinating glimpse behind the curtain. It includes an archival gallery from Quake’s development, featuring playable levels and notes that reveal the often chaotic creative process. Level names like Tim, Tim10A, and Tim14 hint at hallways that were deliberately tight, alongside candid development notes admitting that many concepts ended up as dead ends, offering a wonderfully relatable look at the grit of game creation.

The new chapter also introduced some tantalizing weapon variants that fans have long dreamed about. Players get to experiment with weapons like the Super Axe, which unleashes lightning on successive strikes, and the Laser Cannon, capable of firing ricocheting projectiles that tear through enemies from every angle.

This major reveal took place at QuakeCon, where co-founder John Romero shared a lighthearted moment, noting that the announcement coincided not with the 30th anniversary of the game’s release, but with the 30th anniversary of his departure from id Software. It was a fitting reflection on the company’s monumental legacy.

id Software remains an institution, having marked the end of an era for many luminaries who left the studio after its formative years. Yet, the creative spirit has persisted; Quake evolved into beloved titles like Quake 2 and Quake 3, and the subsequent run of modern Doom games proved that the core innovation never truly ended.

Despite its enduring legacy, id Software is currently navigating new industry challenges. Following substantial layoffs initiated by Microsoft to adjust its Xbox business strategy, the studio faces a fresh kind of adversity. This shift brings renewed focus to the team and the founders who built this iconic world.

As the history books are written, the story of id Software continues. The core group—including co-founders John Romero, John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, and Tom Hall—is scheduled to gather for a rare reunion panel. They will discuss the company’s earliest days, the challenges they overcame, and the innovations that forever changed the landscape of gaming.
