Two steal $2,000 in RAM from esports hotels

Two individuals have recently been arrested by local police for allegedly engaging in a highly specific form of larceny: stealing memory modules from esports hotels to dismantle computer rigs.
The operation reportedly began with Li working alone in a hotel in Shihezi City. As the global demand for RAM—the essential ingredient for modern gaming and AI processing—soared, the cost of these components skyrocketed. This scarcity created an opportunity for those willing to exploit it, turning sophisticated hardware into highly lucrative targets.
Li allegedly soon recruited a partner, Cheng. Together, the pair embarked on a series of hotel stays between May 15 and May 31. During this time, they systematically dismantled computers, extracting valuable memory sticks from the systems they were targeting.
The motive was clear: profit. The stolen memory was listed on second-hand trading platforms, resulting in a reported profit of 13,200 yuan—just under $2,000—from sixteen total memory sticks. This demonstrates how easily highly specialized digital components can become targets when their scarcity is maximized.
The theft highlights the unique vulnerability of RAM. Because memory chips are light and easy to conceal, they represent an ideal commodity for illicit trade.
