The world of World of Warcraft is constantly evolving, but the developers of World of Warcraft: Forever are attempting a delicate balancing act: updating the game’s power while honoring the legacy of its classic roots. Their approach to gear and progression isn’t about simple power bumps; it’s a masterclass in gradual evolution, ensuring that the hunt for the next great item remains just as compelling as the old days.

Blizzard Entertainment, wary of the drastic power increases seen in modern WoW expansions, is keen to avoid the pitfalls of rampant power creep. They recognize that recent updates, including the Midnight expansion, risked rendering previous seasons of gear irrelevant and introducing arbitrary stat adjustments. Their solution for Forever is a careful, measured approach.

“Classic wasn’t far off from this,” said Ion Hazzikostas, vice president and senior game director, describing the approach taken in Forever. The strategy involves slow, gradual progression. For instance, moving from Classic raids like Blackwing Lair to Ahn’Qiraj is only a small jump in item level, allowing previous content to coexist seamlessly.

This philosophy extends to gear. Associate production director Clay Stone emphasizes that the real magic of gear in Forever lies in its continued relevance. “Your best-in-slot that you pick up from a previous raid tier may continue to be your best in slot for a long time,” he noted. The goal is to ensure that old content isn’t invalidated by new systems, preserving the history while embracing innovation.

Even with a level cap of 60, the game keeps the excitement alive through meaningful objectives. Players will still chase gear, focusing on modest item level increases and finding pieces that offer specialized power. An item might become exceptionally powerful in a specific niche—perhaps against a dragon or in a desert environment—making it desirable for specific, challenging encounters.

Beyond just item drops, the developers are focused on keeping the player experience rooted in discovery. To foster a sense of exploration, many chase items are deliberately rare, sometimes taking weeks to reveal. This intentional mystery is designed to keep the meta constantly shifting and encourage players to re-evaluate the best paths forward.

To achieve this sense of mystery, Forever intentionally keeps item stats and properties secret from the client until an item has actually been obtained on the server. This mechanism creates a layer of intrigue, forcing players to discover the true power of their loot rather than relying on pre-knowledge. This focus on hidden knowledge means the game intentionally avoids an Adventure Guide, pushing players to figure out the optimal strategy anew.

Furthermore, the game rewards craft and skill. Developers made a deliberate effort to make tradeskills worthwhile during the leveling process. By lowering the skill requirements for crafting, items from tailoring, leatherworking, and blacksmithing are now attainable closer to the time a player is seeking their best-in-slot gear, making crafting an integral part of the progression, not an afterthought.

Ultimately, the goal of World of Warcraft: Forever is to maintain the spirit of exploration. By ensuring that low-level drops and crafted goods possess real power, and by keeping the underlying system intentionally opaque, the developers aim to keep the magic of hunting, discovering, and figuring out the game alive.
