The legacy of Capcom’s engine continues to deliver thrilling experiences, and this latest installment of Onimusha: Way of the Sword offers a fascinating look into the limits of modern processor scaling. Following recent tests on other titles built on the proprietary RE Engine, we dove deep into how CPUs handle the demands of this classic 3D world, examining not just raw frame rates but the delicate dance of performance across various hardware.

The RE Engine is fundamentally built to leverage the power of the GPU, making graphics rendering the primary bottleneck. However, the challenge for any modern system is ensuring that the CPU can keep pace, especially when running demanding gameplay. The results highlighted that AMD’s X3D chips emerged as strong contenders, though the performance gaps between them were often negligible. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D and Ryzen 7 9800X3D showed impressive results, often extending leads over Intel’s strongest chip in the game, the Core i9-14900K.

Interestingly, the raw speed of a chip didn’t always translate directly into superior performance here. While the Core i9-14900K topped the list for single-core speed, the performance metrics were often tied to overall core architecture. Furthermore, Intel’s lack of specialized support for the RE Engine meant that the performance seen was effectively the ceiling for their current lineup, suggesting future optimization could yield greater gains.

In terms of efficiency, the X3D chips clearly shine. They managed to deliver remarkable frame rates while consuming significantly less power. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D proved to be the most efficient chip tested, achieving over 3.5 frames per watt consumed. This efficiency gap underscored a crucial point: in this game, optimization extends beyond clock speeds to encompass holistic efficiency.
