In a move that signals a major shift in the global memory landscape, storage and memory manufacturer Lexar has introduced a new line of high-performance DDR5 memory kits in China. This latest offering, a 32GB (2x16GB) kit operating at DDR5-7200 with CL38 timings, is not just about speed; it’s a fascinating glimpse into the cutting edge of localized manufacturing and supply chain innovation.
Beyond raw performance, the new memory modules are designed with an eye toward aesthetics and cooling. The kits feature a sandblasted aluminum heat spreader, thermal pads, and eight integrated LEDs that support various RGB lighting effects, blending high-end functionality with striking visual appeal for PC builders.
The real story behind this launch lies in the components themselves. Lexar notes that these modules utilize carefully selected domestically produced DRAM chips. While the actual manufacturer remains undisclosed, industry speculation points toward the possibility that these chips originate from CXMT (ChangXin Memory Technologies). This local production effort is part of a growing trend where major PC hardware manufacturers are exploring domestic sourcing to mitigate international supply constraints.
Lexar has already established a broad compatibility list, confirming support for 43 motherboards across various Intel and AMD platforms, including Intel Z890, B860, and AMD B850 chipsets. This breadth of support demonstrates an effort to integrate these locally sourced components into the wider market.
The ripple effect of this move is significant. Major motherboard producers, such as MSI and Gigabyte, have already begun optimizing their platforms to work with CXMT memory ICs. This indicates that the shift from global sourcing to localized production is gaining serious traction among industry giants.
This isn’t an isolated development. The move by Chinese manufacturers is actively entering the mainstream consumer memory space. For instance, Corsair has already started adopting CXMT DDR5 chips in select memory kits, while other major players like HP and Dell, along with Acer and Asus, are actively qualifying or seeking local partnerships to source domestically made memory chips.
The emergence of locally manufactured DRAM chips earlier this year sparked considerable optimism that a new supplier could alleviate existing supply bottlenecks and ultimately drive down memory prices. While the market is still watching for broader evidence on cost reduction, Lexar’s new DDR5-7200 kit, priced around $592, remains highly competitive against comparable kits from established brands like G.Skill, Corsair, and Kingston, which currently range between $585 and $700.
