Microsoft disables Ask Copilot feature in Windows 11 for unified Copilot app
The integration of artificial intelligence into our daily computing experience is accelerating, and Microsoft is leading the charge with Windows 11. Last year, the promise of this integration took a tangible form: a new way to interact with the operating system through the Taskbar.
This was the concept behind Ask Copilot, a feature designed to swap out the traditional Windows Search box for an experience powered directly by Copilot. The idea was simple yet ambitious: allowing users to summon AI assistance directly from the Taskbar, seamlessly blending conversational interaction with the familiar ability to search for apps and files.
While the vision was exciting, the rollout of this cutting-edge feature proved to be a fascinating journey of iterative development. Initially, the experience was tested with a select group of users, primarily commercial customers utilizing the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. The push to bring this innovation to the broader consumer base was a gradual process.
As Microsoft worked to unify the AI experience, the Ask Copilot feature underwent changes. During updates aimed at merging the consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot into a single application environment, the Ask Copilot experience was temporarily disabled. This pause allowed the development teams to incorporate user feedback and implement necessary changes.
The result of these updates meant that if you were using the Taskbar feature, it would automatically revert to the standard Windows Search experience, restoring the familiar functionality.
It is important to understand that Ask Copilot exists as a distinct, optional experience, separate from the core Windows Search functionality. This separation reflects the fact that the two systems are handled by entirely different teams within Microsoft. Windows Search is managed by the Windows team, focusing on optimizing local results, while Ask Copilot is built by the dedicated Copilot and Microsoft 365 AI teams.
Windows Search is currently undergoing a major overhaul, focused on removing clutter and prioritizing clearer, faster results. Similarly, the Ask Copilot pane has been decluttered, featuring a dedicated chat box for initiating conversations with Copilot, alongside shortcut buttons for launching tools like Copilot Vision.
For those eagerly awaiting the fully polished experience, the takeaway is that while the integration of AI into the operating system is happening at a rapid pace, the specific Ask Copilot experience remains an evolving feature, suggesting that the full vision for seamless AI interaction will continue to unfold over time.
