Pocketpair skips a year update for Palworld 1.1
When Palworld finally hit the public stage in July, it felt like a monumental achievement, marking the culmination of more than two years spent in early access. But as the dust settles from that massive launch, the real story isn’t just about hitting the release button; it’s about navigating the journey from ambitious concept to sprawling reality.
Despite the initial hype, the concurrent player numbers on Steam have begun to settle back down. Yet, even now, months after version 1.0 arrived, the game continues to maintain impressive engagement, proving that the world of Palworld is far from finished.
Behind the scenes, pockets of development are still humming along. While work is undoubtedly ongoing, some key figures in Pocketpair have recently taken the opportunity to offer a dose of reality check to the community regarding future ambitions. John “Bucky” Buckley, the publishing and communications head, acknowledged the success of the initial launch but gently urged players to temper their expectations for what’s next.
Buckley set a high bar by celebrating the 1.0 release, but when fielding suggestions from over 2,000 players—ranging from adding more storage slots to implementing cross-server PvP or allowing players to control their pals—the scope of those ideas quickly became apparent.
Massive undertakings like adding an entirely new continent or introducing twenty more levels are simply not on the roadmap for the next major update. Buckley made it clear that Pocketpair is choosing a different path, focusing instead on quality over sheer scale, and avoiding year-long development cycles just for massive overhauls.
This approach reflects a broader philosophy, especially given Pocketpair’s known opposition to using generative AI in game development. In fact, when discussing complex features like implementing a “variant system” for pals, Buckley noted the sheer time commitment: creating 200+ unique pals by hand would take considerably longer unless significant automation was involved.
This preference highlights a dedication to the core experience. Rather than relying on rapid, AI-driven expansions, the team seems determined to keep the development focused and intentional. It’s a refreshing commitment to doing things correctly, one step at a time.
While there is no concrete timeline for Palworld 1.1, the message remains optimistic: players can look forward to more collaborations. The ongoing evolution of the game suggests that while some massive changes are on hold, the world of Palworld is poised for exciting new additions in the future.
