  • Guild Wars 3 isn’t the only new Guild Wars on the way: ArenaNet just announced a Guild Wars card game

The expansive world of Guild Wars is preparing for a major expansion, not just into new lands and stories, but into an entirely new dimension of gaming. ArenaNet and its parent company, NC, have unveiled an ambitious plan that takes the beloved MMO experience and merges it with the strategic thrill of collectible card games, giving fans a fresh canvas to explore.

This innovative venture takes the spirit of the franchise and transforms it into Mistbound, an official card game licensed by ArenaNet and developed by NC, with crucial input from bilibili. The goal is clear: to give Guild Wars players a dynamic new way to engage with their favorite characters and creatures.

“We felt it was time to give Guild Wars fans a new way to play together, inspired by the card game roots of the franchise,” stated Colin Johanson, studio head at ArenaNet. He highlighted the inspiration drawn from the origins of the franchise, specifically how character attributes can define unique builds within the world of Tyria.

Mistbound doesn’t simply rehash old mechanics; it introduces a revolutionary layer of gameplay known as dynamic movement gameplay. Instead of static cards, the game features a dynamic 5×3 tactical grid where units and commanders are deployed as cards that can actively reposition themselves turn by turn in response to enemy action.

This system is designed to tame the inherent complexity often found in deep strategy games like Magic: The Gathering. As Mistbound producer Hwang Sunwoo explained, the team aimed to shift the complexity away from individual cards and instead express it through the battlefield itself. Players will leverage powerful mechanics such as knockbacks, pulls, and flanking maneuvers to dominate the tactical space.

Adding another layer of immersion, players can bring familiar Guild Wars characters onto the battlefield as commanders, each bringing unique abilities and tactics that players must master. The experience is further enhanced by an immersive soundtrack featuring contributions from Guild Wars‘ original musicians and voice performances for all the familiar regulars.

The involvement of bilibili speaks to the project’s focus on community development. Development is being guided not just by internal design knowledge but also by direct, high-quality player input, promising a game built with the community in mind.

While there is no immediate release date for Mistbound, developers suggest that the game will likely launch toward the end of the year and potentially sometime in 2027. With a focus on dynamic strategy, deep character interaction, and strong community engagement, Mistbound is poised to redefine how Guild Wars fans interact with their favorite world.
