The Aftermath: How Corporate Cuts Are Rewriting the Future of id Software

id Software, the legendary studio responsible for defining the action-packed world of DOOM, has always been known for pushing boundaries. From the classic DOOM games to modern titans like DOOM Eternal and DOOM: The Dark Ages, the team has consistently explored new ideas and genres. But recently, this creative freedom has come under intense scrutiny amidst a massive corporate restructuring that has rocked the gaming industry.

The pressure mounted when Microsoft and Xbox initiated a significant “reset” for their first-party teams, resulting in thousands of job cuts. For id Software, the situation was particularly stark. Reports indicated that half of the studio was reportedly discharged from Microsoft and Xbox, with further digging suggesting 40 remote employees were also let go. This large-scale organizational change has raised serious questions about where the studio’s creative focus will land moving forward.

The shift in corporate priorities—with Xbox directing ZeniMax/Bethesda to concentrate on core intellectual properties—has made the development of ambitious, non-DOOM projects seem incredibly unlikely. The implication is that groundbreaking concepts previously explored by the team may now face severe hurdles before they ever see the light of day.

Yet, even amidst these constraints, creative sparks refused to die. Before the recent upheaval, id Software was reportedly “toying around” with some fascinating concepts for new projects. These ideas showcased a broader vision extending far beyond the demonic arenas that made them famous.

One of the most exciting pitches involved Fury, an original property conceived by studio co-director Hugo Martin. This concept was a blend of sci-fi, noir, and Louisiana/Chicago gangster elements, featuring a unique “Gun Fu” gameplay style that aimed to capture the feel of a John Wick movie. Despite its potential, this vision was never greenlit.

Another fascinating possibility was a reboot of the long-dormant Perfect Dark series. When Microsoft and Xbox shuttered the studio, id Software had reportedly considered developing a new entry in the 2000s stealth-action shooter series, even drafting concept art for it. This dormant franchise represents a missed opportunity for the creators.

Additionally, there was the intriguing concept of Ironwood, a survival-focused Western game set with robots. It was rumored to share thematic similarities with popular franchises like Westworld, promising an atmospheric and unique experience.

While the focus is understandably locked onto their iconic DOOM legacy, these sidelined projects underscore the powerful creative force that id Software possesses. The question remains whether, with the current corporate landscape, these inventive concepts will resurface, or if the studio will be limited to refining its legendary roots for the foreseeable future.
