The skies over modern conflict are increasingly filled not just with aircraft, but with tiny, deadly threats: FPV drones. These low-cost, highly agile quadcopters have emerged as a leading cause of combat casualties, posing a unique and relentless challenge to ground forces. To combat this aerial menace, innovators are racing to develop autonomous, cost-effective countermeasures, and San Francisco defense startup Mara is leading the charge with its innovative system called Spike.
Mara has recently secured $7 million in a pre-seed round to bring Spike to the forefront of counter-drone technology. Spike is a portable system designed to neutralize these threats, and it delivers on the promise of high-tech defense in a surprisingly accessible package. The core of the system is the Seekers—250-gram autonomous interceptors housed inside a backpack, engineered to be significantly cheaper than the munitions they destroy.
The scale of the operation is impressive. A single Spike launcher can hold up to 48 Seekers and reloads in under a minute, allowing for rapid deployment against swarms. Each Seeker is capable of engaging targets out to approximately one mile, giving operators a substantial range to manage the threat. This speed is key; while the Seekers operate with autonomous precision, human operators remain in the loop, ensuring rules of engagement are meticulously followed before any launch is authorized.
The technology behind Spike is equally sophisticated. The system utilizes a Spotter targeting unit that fuses electro-optical and acoustic sensors with an optional low-emission W-band radar. This setup allows the system to detect and track both fiber-optic and fully autonomous drones, regardless of weather or time of day. Crucially, the system employs detection methods that bypass radio-frequency jammers, ensuring the defense remains effective even in heavily contested electronic environments.
Mara’s design philosophy centers on unmatched efficiency. The Seekers are engineered to achieve a favorable cost ratio against the enemy drones they intercept, making the defense system a highly economical solution compared to larger, more complex systems. This approach contrasts sharply with older, more expensive solutions, offering a viable path for mass deployment.
The real-world impact of this innovation is already being tested on the front lines. Mara has already seen its technology deployed, including tracking multiple FPV drones from nearly 40 kilometers back in areas where Ukrainian forces have been operating. Furthermore, the company has deepened its global engagement, joining NATO’s DIANA accelerator 2026 cohort and engaging in cooperative research with several U.S. defense organizations.
Beyond military applications, Mara is demonstrating its versatility by running civilian pilot programs, including operations at a commercial port in South Korea. This global involvement underscores the technology’s potential to solve complex security challenges worldwide.
With this robust foundation, the rollout of Spike is accelerating. Ground-mounted Spike units are slated to be available to customers by the end of 2026, with plans to develop vehicle-mounted and man-portable variants and scale production for 2027. Mara is not just developing a product; they are building a new paradigm for autonomous, affordable, and decisive aerial defense.
