When you first dive into Aniimo, you’re handed a buffet of digital cuteness, blending open-world exploration, creature capturing, and fashion design. It mixes the satisfying mechanics of Pokémon with the expansive world of Genshin Impact and the aesthetic flair of Infinity Nikki. But beneath the surface of this charming experience, a fascinating question emerges: is Aniimo truly a gacha game?
The answer, surprisingly, is no. Despite the presence of many currencies and tempting menus, Aniimo sidesteps the traditional gacha model that defines games like Genshin Impact or Infinity Nikki.
There are no random odds or arbitrary “pity” systems locking away core items. You don’t rely on pulling on banners to secure your collection of Aniimo, equipment, or fashion items. Instead, most of what you acquire is earned simply by playing the game. Cosmetics, for example, are generally tied to purchasing a fixed amount of in-game currency, rather than random chance.
However, the game did experiment with gacha mechanics during its final beta. The Rift Exploration event, which involved spending premium currency for a chance to catch a Legendary Aniimo, felt much more like a gacha banner. Unfortunately, this system was met with significant backlash from testers. Players found the events repetitive, and there was widespread frustration that the developers had promised Aniimo would not be locked behind random chance.
Following this feedback, the Rift Exploration system was replaced with a token collection structure for the full launch, emphasizing progression over pure luck.
So, if the acquisition method isn’t based on gacha, how does Aniimo monetize its popularity? The core model revolves around a sophisticated cosmetics shop. Players convert real money into Lumin Crystals, which are then exchanged for outfits and accessories. While some items are accessible through in-game currencies, the most coveted and cutest sets remain locked behind a paywall.
Aniimo also utilizes various monetization tactics. Players can acquire items through shop bundles that offer Lumin Crystals in exchange for rare Aniipods, profile backgrounds, or stat alterations. Of course, dedicated players can still earn many of these items through gameplay and rewards.
Furthermore, the game features a battle pass, known as the “Companion Handbook,” which provides a free tier alongside two premium tracks. These premium tracks unlock extra goodies, including rare Aniimo, exclusive cosmetics, and a fast-track to higher levels of progression.
Ultimately, becoming a master collector in Aniimo requires a blend of activities. You can acquire Aniimo by throwing an Aniipod during exploration, in special battles, or at Bloom spots. You can hatch eggs to find diverse rarities, with the option to modify the outcome to guarantee shiny or elite stats. Legendary Aniimo are earned through the dedicated collection of unique tokens and completing the story arcs of these powerful creatures.
