Arc Raiders Hits Pause Button on Expedition System for Major Overhaul
The high-stakes world of Arc Raiders is taking a temporary detour as Embark Studios has announced a significant pause on the Expedition system until early 2027. This decision signals a major internal shift, as the studio seeks to fundamentally rework the feature to address long-standing player complaints that incremental fixes simply cannot resolve.
For many players, the Expedition system represented a significant time investment. It functioned similarly to prestige mechanics in other titles, requiring players to invest time and resources into a “caravan” that eventually granted unique benefits and a full reset of levels and inventory. While offering these rewards, many felt the grind involved didn’t always align with the payoff, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among the player base.
The studio recognized that the current structure, with elements like tight departure windows and the overall reward structure, required more than minor adjustments. This realization prompted a pivot toward a complete systemic overhaul rather than simple patches. As one of the executive producers for the game, Aleksander Grøndal, reflected on the system’s state, noting that while the current mechanics were functional, they needed substantial change.
Grøndal shared an ambitious view: the team is now exploring whether they should scrap the entire Expedition system altogether. This willingness to challenge the established mechanics suggests a commitment to creating a structure that feels fairer and more rewarding for everyone.
The pause means that the current Expedition cycle will be winding down. The fifth Expedition, scheduled to depart at the end of September, will be the final iteration until Embark has completed its planned system overhaul—or potentially, decided to move in a completely new direction.
While the exact fate of the system remains undecided, players can look forward to major changes. The next major content drop, Frozen Trails, is slated for October, promising a fresh challenge that will test the evolving landscape of the game. Whatever the outcome of the system debate, the promise is clear: players should anticipate a substantial and much-needed evolution of how they engage with Arc Raiders.
