When chasing the bargain on essential extra hardware, the lure of extreme low cost often wins out. Why spend a fortune when a basic USB hub can be sourced for pennies? But as one might expect, cutting corners on electronics often comes at a steep price.

Dr Gough Lui decided to put that temptation to the ultimate test. He took a $5 hub sourced from AliExpress and subjected it to a rigorous internal inspection, revealing some truly shocking design choices hidden within the cheap plastic shell.

The initial look promised a simple solution, but dissecting the device quickly uncovered immediate physical compromises. When the chassis was pried open—with no screws in sight—Dr Gough discovered that the hub only featured four pins on six ports, meaning the performance advertised as “USB 3.0” was largely an illusion. At best, some ports were limited to the slower USB 2.0 standard, with only one port managing the full speed configuration.

Deeper analysis revealed further evidence of cost-saving measures. The connections themselves utilized economical solder that proved susceptible to flexing, adding another layer of structural vulnerability. Furthermore, all the blue indicators signifying USB 3.0 support were connected across the main lines, a simple cosmetic fix masking deeper operational issues.

However, the real danger lay not in the physical construction but in the electrical design concerning power delivery. The internal chips responsible for monitoring port activity and controlling power simply did not interact with these indicators. Instead, the LED indicator was just wired in series across the VBUS line.

This oversight led to the most alarming discovery: the external power connection was directly commoned with the outside port, completely bypassing any safety switches or internal controls. This configuration means that an external power supply can backfeed energy directly into the computer system. This is a scenario that experts have warned about for decades as a potential source of damage to ports and sensitive computer components.

To further illustrate this disregard for safety, the facility for an external power brick was clearly present within the hub. While the device didn’t include one, the mere existence of these unprotected connections introduces significant risk. Attempting to plug such a device into a power source could stress the Power Supply Unit or other sensitive components.

Dr Gough concluded that this seemingly inexpensive gadget is, in fact, a mildly dangerous device—not because it will explode, but because its design actively invites potential damage to connected hardware. The risk of damaging your rig, or risking invalidating cashback deals, simply isn’t worth the few dollars saved. When it comes to essential components, choosing quality and safety always outweighs the cheapest price tag.
