After a highly anticipated wait, the world of gaming just got a fresh dose of myth and mayhem. Following the global success of Black Myth: Wukong, developer Game Science hinted at a lengthy pause before revealing its spiritual successor. That wait is finally over, as the studio has dropped a compelling 15-minute gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, pulling us into a fascinating new world steeped in Chinese mythology and folklore.

The trailer immediately introduces a protagonist who is anything but ordinary. We are introduced to a dishevelled adventuring swordsman whose journey involves navigating bizarre adventures—from sipping creature barnacles and kicking logs to braving confrontations with biblical-scale tidal waves. It’s a wild, visually rich introduction that sets a tone perfectly suited for a pseudo-soulslike adventure.

When the action kicks off, the game leans heavily into satisfying combat. While the movement is fluid and confident, the gameplay focuses less on dramatic rolls and more on an enjoyable economy of motion; the character deftly turns just enough to let incoming blows miss by narrow inches. This approach suggests a focus on skillful positioning rather than pure, frantic dodging.

The combat toolkit is where the trailer truly shines. The protagonist unlocks unconventional and imaginative ways to engage foes. Facing swarms of swamp creatures, he can deploy firebombs to clear the area, then magically channel that fiery energy directly into his sword for temporary damage boosts. Furthermore, he summons powerful allies, such as a hulking, tiger-like spirit who can fight alongside him or be fully controlled by the player, adding a dynamic layer to the battles.

The encounters are equally inventive. The trailer showcases unique boss fights, including a challenging confrontation with an oyster man, demonstrating that this new adventure will offer more than just traditional swordplay.

Visually, the game embraces a fantastical aesthetic, filled with striking imagery of glowing mushroom men, demon burial, and even facefuls of makeup, all woven together with an incredible soundtrack featuring skeletons. This blend of high-fantasy adventure and distinct visual flair promises an experience far removed from standard action fare.

But the biggest question lingering after the reveal is identity. While the visual evidence is tantalizing, the trailer leaves the identity of the protagonist ambiguous. We are left wondering whether this swashbuckling hero is indeed the titular ghost-slaying Taoist deity, Zhong Kui, who was teased in earlier reveals. Game Science confirmed that Black Myth: Zhong Kui is still in early development, meaning the full story of this mythological journey is yet to unfold.
