Build a better Spotify Wrapped using Excel
We all participate in the annual ritual of Spotify Wrapped, that yearly dose of personalized listening habits presented in a catchy, digestible format. But for the past few years, the magic of the summary has increasingly felt hollow. Despite the mountain of data Spotify clearly holds on our listening habits, the insights provided by Wrapped often fall short of being truly meaningful, leaving many of us underwhelmed.
This feeling of disconnect sparked a personal quest: the desire to own the narrative of our own music consumption. Instead of passively accepting the data packaged for us, I decided to dive deeper and build my own experience.
The plan was ambitious: to obtain the raw data and process it myself. I initiated a process to request my full listening history directly from Spotify. Armed with this trove of information, I set out to move beyond the curated summary and dig up the kinds of granular insights that the big platforms rarely reveal.
The journey involved meticulous work, wrestling with spreadsheets and data sets in Excel. This wasn’t just about counting playlists; it was about uncovering patterns, identifying subtle shifts in musical taste, and finding the unique stories hidden within those listening hours that the official summary conveniently omits.
By taking control of the data, I transformed a simple annual recap into a deep, personal exploration. It proved that sometimes, the most valuable insights aren’t the ones handed to us, but the ones we dare to uncover for ourselves.
