Bungie ends seasonal schedule for Destiny-like features
Bungie is shaking up the way it delivers content for Marathon, moving away from rigid seasonal schedules to give the development team the freedom to build, test, and refine features before they reach players.
This strategic shift means that content previously planned for this month’s seasonal refresh, the Nightfall update, is being delayed into December.
However, this change isn’t about waiting; it’s about building a healthier experience. The team acknowledged that the previous seasonal model had caused uneven progression, inadvertently accelerating some players into the endgame while leaving others behind.
To correct this, a smaller, timely update is coming in October. This refresh will serve as a crucial reset, refreshing the in-game economy, resetting progression, and generally improving the live game for all Marathon players.
The October refresh is also set to introduce new gameplay experiments, including the return of the Vault Breaker PvE mode for a limited time. Looking ahead, the path forward promises a significant evolution for Marathon.
The biggest development is the move toward making PvE a permanent mode. This evolution will introduce exciting new elements, including a new Runner shell, a social space complete with a firing range, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, and various other deep enhancements.
This is part of the larger vision, which Bungie is calling Symbiosis. The team plans to use player feedback and ongoing engagement to continually refine and expand Marathon into what they envision as a more alien and dynamic survival experience.
While some players have expressed impatience regarding the extended wait for new content, the focus remains on delivering a more well-rounded Marathon—one that offers a fully fleshed-out single-player mode combined with deeper social interactivity. This evolution aims to make Marathon even more Destiny-like.
Bungie’s communications lead, Dylan Gafner, has promised more updates in the coming weeks and months, emphasizing that the journey toward this expanded vision is underway.
