When the developers of <Company of Heroes 3> first unveiled the dynamic Italian campaign, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. It felt like a grand historical spectacle, blending the tactical depth of the real-time strategy genre with the sweeping narrative of World War II, creating an experience that some observers compared to the epic scale of <Total War: World War 2>.

However, as the game evolved, a deeper philosophical challenge emerged. While the real-time battles remained a showcase of brilliant tactical gameplay, the narrative campaign, intended to be dynamic and immersive, struggled to live up to its ambition. The Italian storyline, conceived early in development, became a stumbling block that the team found difficult to resolve.

The goal was massive: to build the biggest <Company of Heroes> game ever, launching with multiple factions and two full campaigns. This ambition, while inspiring, ultimately led to some polish issues and bugs at launch, prompting mixed user reviews and a generally ‘Mixed’ standing on platforms like Steam.

The journey of the Italian campaign, in particular, highlighted the complexities of large-scale game development. The team admitted that attempting to achieve such a grand vision with all the necessary features proved to be a significant undertaking. They recognized that getting the campaign to feel truly dynamic was a challenge that they did not fully overcome within the development timeline.

Relic CEO Justin Dowdeswell reflected on this experience, acknowledging the disappointment that the final product did not meet the high internal standards. Despite the subsequent postmortem discussions aimed at fixing the issues, the team acknowledged that some decisions were made too early in the project cycle, making it difficult to course-correct later on.

Despite the mixed reception of the launch, the developers maintained their dedication to the franchise. Time and again, Relic has shown they are committed to their core audience, releasing additions and updates, including <Company of Heroes 3 2.0> and the standalone roguelite experience <Company of Heroes 3 Final Stand>. These efforts demonstrate an enduring commitment to the world they created.

Looking ahead, the legacy of the series continues to evolve. There is a long-anticipated prospect of bringing the original game back as <Company of Heroes: Definitive Edition>, promising enhanced textures, quality-of-life improvements, and a 64-bit upgrade in 2027. While the execution of the initial vision faced hurdles, the enduring quality of the RTS battles and the dedication of the team ensure that the spirit of this series remains highly respected.
