Commodore re-releases TAC-2 joystick for $49 in five colors
For those who remember the golden age of 8-bit gaming, there’s a specific piece of hardware that conjures up instant nostalgia: the Totally Accurate Controller, or TAC-2. This original joystick, born from the era of Commodore and Amiga computing, was once a staple for retro enthusiasts. Today, however, those physical relics are increasingly rare and expensive, often fetching over $100 on online marketplaces.
Facing this shortage and skyrocketing prices, Commodore decided it was time to bring back this beloved piece of gaming history—not just as a nostalgic item, but as a thoughtfully redesigned piece of hardware. After polling their fanbase for input, the decision was made: they would remake the TAC-2, injecting new features while honoring its classic spirit.
The original TAC-2, released in 1983 by Suncom, had already earned a reputation for durability, boasting claims of surviving three million moves without failure. Its design, featuring fire buttons placed on the front corners, offered unique control schemes beloved by both right-handed and left-handed gamers.
Commodore’s mission was to not simply replicate the past but meaningfully enhance it for the future. The revamped joystick sets its sights on making the TAC-2 a premium collectible, featuring cosmetic updates that speak directly to gaming legends. Among the new options are five distinct colorways, including shades mirroring the classic C64 Ultimate aesthetic: BASIC Beige, Starlight, and Founders (gold).
To further enhance the experience, Commodore integrated new flair, including LED lights within the clicky fire buttons. For those who prefer a purist look, two options—C= White and Knight Black—offer a cleaner aesthetic without the added lighting.
Beyond the stunning cosmetic updates, the engineering foundation of the TAC-2 was also overhauled. The original design utilized an automobile TR-418 tire valve assembly. Recognizing that modern materials offer superior strength, Commodore opted to fabricate its own steel shaft, assuring that their version is significantly stronger than the original.
Compatibility remains a key focus. Like its predecessor, the new TAC-2 retains the original 9-pin controller port, ensuring seamless connection with legacy hardware like the C64 Ultimate. However, recognizing modern demands, the joystick also supports USB adapters, allowing retro controllers to connect effortlessly with contemporary PCs and devices.
When you look at the final product, it’s a solidly built piece of gear: measuring 101 x 101 x 114mm and weighing approximately 300g. It also comes equipped with a practical 2-meter cable for maximum flexibility.
For those ready to embrace this retro revival, the new TAC-2 is available in two primary formats: the standard version at $49.99, or the limited Founders Edition, which features gold PVD accents and costs $64. Pre-orders are open, with shipping scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026.
