Ditch port forwarding for a mesh VPN and secure your home


The digital world, for many, is a landscape of connectivity, but for those who enjoy tinkering with their networks, it often presents a balancing act between wanting to share and needing to protect. For a long time, the simple act of port forwarding seemed like the ultimate key—a straightforward way to open a hole in your home network and expose services to the open internet.

It started with small, delightful experiments. I began with basic tasks, setting up a game server and a TeamSpeak VOIP server to let friends connect. It was a fun, immediate way to share what I was doing with the world.

But as my curiosity deepened, the goals expanded beyond simple gaming. I started exploring hosting media servers and dreaming of replacing costly subscriptions with self-hosted alternatives. This transition quickly highlighted a crucial realization: simply opening ports means creating an invitation for any and all traffic to wander in. If a port is open, well, the world will find it.

This realization pushed me to rethink the approach. Instead of blindly forwarding ports for every service I wanted to access externally, I began building a more sophisticated, layered security strategy.

For the services that absolutely needed external exposure, I found a smarter solution: the reverse proxy. This method allows controlled, specific access, letting me expose only what is necessary without sacrificing security.

For the more private, sensitive aspects of my network, I shifted focus to encryption and security. I incorporated a mesh VPN, which handles the personal connections and ensures that sensitive data remains shielded, keeping the external exposure minimal.

The shift is less about shutting the door entirely and more about using the right tools for the right job. It turns the chaotic act of port forwarding into a deliberate, secure architectural decision, proving that even the most open systems can be managed with wit and proper planning.
