GameStop reopens stores nationwide starting Sept 11
GameStop Reopens Doors Amidst Shifting Gaming Landscape
After a period of significant downsizing, GameStop is poised to bring select stores back to life across the nation. The retailer announced plans to reopen a selection of previously closed locations nationwide starting September 11th, though the exact number of stores slated to reopen remains undisclosed.
This decision comes after GameStop had previously initiated one of its most extensive rounds of store closures, aiming to improve profitability and cut costs. The company had listed around 470 locations across the United States as either confirmed to close or already closed during that period, reflecting a larger effort to redefine its physical retail footprint.
The move to reopen stores is particularly interesting when viewed against the backdrop of the wider gaming industry. The market is rapidly evolving away from physical media; digital downloads have become the dominant format, and console manufacturers are increasingly offering hardware without physical disc drives. This trend has been accelerated by major industry shifts, such as Sony’s plans to end physical PlayStation game disc production by 2028.
While the gaming community has reacted strongly to the decline of physical media, GameStop’s strategy appears to be navigating this shift by focusing on its diversified business model. The company’s focus has expanded far beyond traditional game sales, leaning heavily into collectibles and software revenue.
Fiscal 2025 filings reveal that software, including physical games and digital download codes, accounted for 20.1% of the company’s sales. More significantly, collectibles have emerged as a major revenue stream, accounting for 29.2% of fiscal 2025 revenue and growing by 47.7% year over year. This emphasis on tangible merchandise suggests a resilience that transcends the pure reliance on physical discs.
This business pivot provides a context for the reopening announcement. While the decline of physical game media has been undeniable, GameStop’s current focus on collectibles and software may provide a foundation for limited store reopenings rather than a complete reversal of its broader strategy.
