Take, for example, the memory of acquiring a card like the GTX 1060. Back then, getting a capable piece of hardware felt achievable and affordable; you could find a powerful GPU for a steal, often for less than 299 dollars. That sense of reward, where performance aligned beautifully with cost, is something that modern enthusiasts often feel a deep longing for.

Today, the landscape of PC hardware feels less like a balanced ecosystem and more like an absurd, rapidly escalating series of specialized components. The pace of innovation has led to a situation where defining what constitutes a “mid-range” GPU has become an exercise in frustration.

It is no longer simple to identify where you stand in the complex hierarchy of modern graphics cards. The sheer volume of new releases, evolving performance metrics, and the constant introduction of new technologies means that what was once a clear benchmark has dissolved into a confusing mess of performance tiers.

This shift highlights a major irony in the gaming world: while hardware capabilities have exploded, the clarity surrounding that capability has diminished. Trying to pinpoint a genuine mid-range component now often yields wildly different and conflicting answers, turning what should be an intuitive classification into a maddening technical puzzle.
