The digital realm often hides dark corners, and recently, the world of indie gaming experienced a sharp intrusion. Secret Neighbor, the multiplayer spinoff of the popular 2017 horror hit Hello Neighbor, was temporarily taken offline following a significant security breach that saw a hacker gain access to the game’s backend systems and wipe player data.

The incident, which unfolded last week, was not a simple glitch. The attacker managed to obtain admin credentials, subsequently deleting player profiles, in-game progression, and other crucial data stored on the server infrastructure. Developers Steam post and publisher tinyBuild quickly identified the event as a coordinated attack on their entire platform.

Hologryph and tinyBuild explained that the breach was part of a broader assault on their server systems and infrastructure across all platforms. While they assured the community that no personal data or sensitive information was compromised, the scale of the attack necessitated immediate action.

In response to the unfolding situation, the development team opted to temporarily shut down the game. This measure allowed them to address the deep-seated vulnerabilities that had been exploited and fully close the security gaps. They have since alerted relevant authorities and are actively collaborating with PlayFab, the company providing the backend services, in an intensive effort to recover the wiped data.

The situation escalated beyond a simple data theft. The hacker issued a defiant ultimatum, stating their intention to continue targeting the game and its backend systems until Secret Neighbor is removed from sale across all platforms.

Despite the immediate operational pause, the game remains available on Steam for purchase. While the exact timeline for a full resolution remains undetermined, the developers have committed to keeping the community updated on their progress and the unfolding events.

This security scare comes amidst a thriving gaming landscape. Secret Neighbor was released in 2019, and the studio has seen significant growth; tinyBuild invested $3 million into Hologryph, eventually securing a majority stake and acquiring the original Hello Neighbor developer, Dynamic Pixels, months prior.

The franchise continues to hold strong. The original Steam news is still performing well, recently achieving its highest peak concurrent player-count in March this year, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the Neighbor universe.

As the teams work through the technical recovery and bolster their defenses, the community watches closely, awaiting updates on how this digital confrontation will play out.
