HGST and WD drives beat Seagate and Toshiba in reliability

A recent, highly scrutinized study has delivered a sobering look at the long-term performance and durability of the hard drives powering some of the world’s largest data centers.

The research, which was published in a peer-reviewed IEEE journal, brought together experts to analyze performance metrics over an extensive period, revealing critical insights into the lifespan of critical storage components.

The study focused on a staggering amount of real usage data. Researchers analyzed information from 443,156 hard drives utilized within Backblaze data centers across a significant timeframe spanning from 2013 through the second quarter of 2025. This massive dataset allowed the scientists to track exactly how these drives performed under constant, heavy load.

The scope of the analysis was truly immense, covering more than 1.66 million drive-years. This metric represents the cumulative operational history of the storage devices, providing a comprehensive view of wear and tear accumulated over years of continuous service in demanding environments.

Led by Christoph Siemroth of the University of Essex and Yeomyung Park of Sungkyunkwan University, the team meticulously examined these figures to assess the true endurance and potential failure points within enterprise storage systems.
