The promise of a new life simulation has always been a magnet for gamers, and when Inzoi entered the scene, expectations were sky-high. Many hoped it would deliver the deep, immersive experience that the genre has craved for years, positioning itself as the true competitor to titles like The Sims 4.

However, as early access provided a stark reality check, the initial reception was less than flawless. Life simulation expert Mollie Taylor described the early version of Inzoi as a “shallow imitation” of its rivals. This feedback underscored a significant challenge for the developers, leading director Hyungjin “Kjun” Kim to admit that building a full life simulation proved much harder than anticipated, especially when testing was done by users on the studio’s behalf.

Despite the initial hurdles, Kim has dedicated the past year to refining the experience. While the team focused on the core game, a far more ambitious vision was taking shape—a concept designed to redefine how players interact with simulation and reality altogether.

This vision materialized as Canvastown, a new mode that shifts the focus away from the mundane, day-to-day management of lives and toward capturing extraordinary, memorable moments. The core goal of Canvastown is to allow players to step out of the routine and immerse themselves in unique narrative experiences within the world of Inzoi.

The gameplay revolves around a highly personalized, cinematic approach. Players begin by creating their own character and customizing their living space, setting the stage before entering the online hub, AR Company. This dedicated space allows up to fifty players to converse and interact in a shared channel under mutual agreement, essentially forming a mini online village populated by players and even Inzoi’s original NPCs.

Kim envisioned this as a directorial experience. By assigning roles and casting actors, players can craft unique scenarios, making the experience less about managing statistics and more about storytelling. Furthermore, the framework supports deeper creative expression through “script mods,” which allow players to create mini-games, such as car racing scenarios, promising endless possibilities for interactive play.

The ultimate aspiration is to facilitate an escape—to allow players to step away from everyday reality and live out entirely different, bespoke lives within the world of Inzoi, much like the immersive escapism found in films such as Ready Player One.

While the scope of the vision is undeniably ambitious, Kim remains grounded, emphasizing that Canvastown is a “side project”. He stressed that the Inzoi Studio remains laser-focused on achieving the core goals of the main game, suggesting that the development of this expansive new feature is a journey undertaken with careful consideration for the overall project.
