LG Display unveils FLiPP for brighter OLEDs


LG Display is pushing the boundaries of display technology with a revolutionary manufacturing method called FLiPP, promising a significant leap forward for the next generation of OLED screens. This innovative approach fundamentally changes how pixels are patterned, eliminating the need for intricate fine metal masks, which in turn boosts efficiency, brightness, and long-term durability.

The excitement surrounding FLiPP is set to reach a wider audience as LG Display prepares to showcase the technology at IMID 2026 in Busan. The core benefit lies in the physics of the process: FLiPP increases the pixel aperture ratio by approximately 55 percent. This enhancement allows panels to achieve up to 60 percent higher peak brightness, dramatically improving the visual experience.

Beyond raw brightness, the manufacturing shift delivers substantial operational advantages. By utilizing photolithography and UV etching to apply RGB pixels directly onto the full 8.5-generation mother glass, the process improves utilization efficiency by up to 64 percent. This streamlined approach significantly reduces production costs across a wide spectrum of panel sizes.

The long-term impact is equally compelling. FLiPP results in a 140 percent increase in panel lifespan, offering consumers and manufacturers a more durable display solution. Furthermore, the method achieves a 13 percent reduction in power consumption compared to traditional Fine Metal Mask (FMM) production, addressing critical concerns regarding energy efficiency in modern devices.

While FLiPP is transforming manufacturing, LG Display’s commitment to advanced panel technology extends further. The company has already received recognition for its Hyper Double Scanning (HDS) panel-driving technology, which won the IMID Display of the Year Award. This award-winning HDS technology is already integrated across LG Display‘s mass-produced OLED TV lineup, demonstrating a continued dedication to superior display performance.

While some observers note that OLED pricing has already seen significant reductions in recent years for TVs and gaming monitors, experts suggest that FLiPP represents a critical step toward refining manufacturing efficiency and enhancing panel performance, rather than signaling an immediate change in consumer pricing.
