The launch of a fighting game beta is always a thrilling gamble, but for the release of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, the excitement was unfortunately overshadowed by technical headaches. While the gameplay itself captivated players, the experience for PC users was marred by significant performance issues that tested the patience of the community.

The initial rollout was already chaotic. The playtest for Sony’s exclusive tag fighter coincided with disruptions to PlayStation Network services, causing widespread downtime in some regions. Meanwhile, those of us on the PC side faced a different kind of challenge: intense stuttering and generally poor optimization that undermined what was otherwise a slick and stylish combat experience, regardless of hardware.

Despite the visual and performance struggles, the game enjoyed massive success. The beta reached an all-time peak of 33,233 concurrent players on Steam alone, successfully surpassing the concurrent player counts of previous major titles like Street Fighter 6 (32,787) and Tekken 8 (15,035).

This high engagement made the subsequent performance issues even more frustrating. Some players felt the optimization was simply inexcusable. One community member bluntly described the situation, calling it “one of the worst PC ports” they had encountered recently and expressed frustration about the lack of immediate fixes.

In response to this feedback, developers Arc System Works quickly acknowledged the problems affecting the PC version of Tōkon. They confirmed that their team was actively investigating the performance issues and working on a solution, offering an apology for the impact on the player experience.

To help players navigate the rough waters, the development team released a helpful six-point thread detailing troubleshooting options. These suggestions aimed to alleviate some of the strain, including running the Shader Warm-Up tool, disabling Frame Generation within the NVIDIA App, and turning off various screen-recording utilities.

Some experts speculated that these performance bottlenecks may stem from background processes, suggesting that the anti-cheat systems and various PlayStation services running in the background were contributing to the CPU-intensive load on the game.

The clock is now ticking. With the full release of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls scheduled for August 6, the developers face a demanding timeline to resolve these lingering PC performance issues and ensure that this highly anticipated title delivers a flawless experience to all players.
