Capcom has been serving up a delightful parade of weapon breakdown videos lately, teasing the exciting new Boost Bracer mechanics in the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion. These videos are showcasing how the new system injects a potent dose of speed and impact into existing combat, promising a deliciously over-the-top experience for hunters.

At the heart of this update is the Boost Bracer, a system that allows hunters to juice their combat actions with extra speed and impact, unlocking spectacular new attacks. The question then naturally turns to weapon popularity: which tool will become the favored choice for these explosive new abilities?

Leading Monster Hunter developers recently shared their insights regarding how this combat flow is evolving. When asked which weapon they expected to see climb the popularity rankings in Ascendance, one of the key producers offered an immediate and emphatic answer: the Hammer.

This strong preference wasn’t born from speculation; it was rooted in extensive personal experience. The developer, who has a decades-long history as a hammer diehard, demonstrated his devotion by revealing that he had used the hammer in every single one of his 895 completed hunts. He confirmed that he would utilize the new mid-hunt weapon swapping feature in Wilds by switching between hammers for both of his weapons.

The game’s design seems to embrace this devotion. The hammer’s Boost Bracer toolkit is particularly exciting, featuring the return of the Rise Impact Crater switch skill as a new attack option. Once the hunters enter this boosted state, they gain access to a mid-charge boost dash for dynamic repositioning, closing distance, and a brutal new one-armed slam to follow up heavy attacks.

While the Hammer has clearly cemented its place among the most popular weapons, other options are also vying for attention. The director of the expansion, Takuro Hiraoka, offered a different perspective, suggesting that while the long sword maintains its status at the top of the popularity charts, the gunlance might see a surge in appeal among new players.

Hiraoka pointed to the unique appeal of the gunlance, suggesting that its explosive shells can be used for airborne plunging attacks and overheated stake thrusts, offering a special kind of combat romance. This dynamic interplay between explosive power and aerial mobility ensures that Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance promises a battlefield where personal preference truly shapes the thrill of the hunt.
