Mini PC to Tailscale relay: Remote transfers go instant


The promise of a private, secure network should be seamless. That is the dream of any tech enthusiast building a home lab, where devices communicate efficiently and securely, regardless of geography. For me, that dream began with Tailscale, the go-to solution for remotely accessing my home network while traveling.

Tailscale offered the framework for connecting scattered services—a private mesh network that promised simplicity and security. But as I began integrating a demanding set of services onto this foundation, the reality of performance quickly became a source of frustration.

The real test of the network’s capabilities arrived when I started pushing high-bandwidth tasks across the Tailscale mesh. Syncing photo libraries via Immich, uploading receipts to a paperless document management system like paperless-ngx, or streaming media from a Jellyfin library—all these activities began crawling at an agonizing pace.

It felt like a paradox: I had achieved a private, secure connectivity, yet the experience felt deliberately sluggish. I began to accept this slow pace as the inevitable toll of using Tailscale’s private mesh networking solution.

In the end, the lesson wasn’t about chasing perfect speed, but about understanding the trade-offs inherent in building a decentralized system. It taught me that while privacy and control are priceless, the performance of those connections is often secondary considerations. Sometimes, the sheer satisfaction of having a secure, private network outweighs the frustration of waiting a few extra seconds for a large file to transfer.
